Week 12: Post-Soviet Fantasies

A couple things to note:

  1. I’ve given you two versions of Kombinatsia’s “American Boy.” I encourage you to watch the one linked from Rutube.ru, if only for its fabulous early 90s costumes and dancing.
  2. English lyrics for Marina Korol’s “Russia, I’m a Patriot”:

“Our dear guests from abroad, welcome to our mighty country! Welcome to Russia!

Ah, these Russian steppes and fields

Nothing native is unimportant to me

Our Russia is so loved by everyone

It’s the strongest country!

Ah, how I love our Russia

I send the sanctions far away

Let the whole people dance a Russian dance

And I’ll sing a song to this dance

Oh, you are Russia, my Russia

How good that you’re mine

This bear, a balalaika, and vodka

I’m a patriot, your patriot!

A region rich with oil and gas

This is my native Russia

How many people live here in friendship

Let other countries follow our example

Oh, you are Russia, my Russia

How good that you’re mine

This bear, a balalaika, and vodka

I’m a patriot, your patriot!

  1. I haven’t given you the lyrics for the Bulgarian Women’s Choir’s performance. Part of what’s interesting about this one is that understanding the lyrics is arguably unnecessary.
